Papertoys, the Internet phenomenon that’s hot among graphic designers and illustrators around the world, now comes to kids in the coolest new book. Created and curated by Brian Castleforte, a graphic designer and papertoy pioneer who rounded up 25 of the hottest papertoy designers from around the world (Indonesia, Japan, Australia, Italy, Croatia, Chile, even Jackson, Tennessee), Papertoy Monsters offers 50 fiendishly original die-cut designs that are ready to pop out, fold, and glue. The book interleaves card stock with paper stock for a unique craft package; the graphics are colorful and hip, combining the edginess of anime with the goofy fun of Uglydolls and other collectibles.
Plus each character comes with its own back-story.And the results are delicious: meet Pharaoh Thoth Amon, who once ruled Egypt but is now a mummy who practices dark magic in his sarcophagus. Or Zumbie the Zombie, who loves nothing more than a nice plate of brains and yams. NotSoScary, a little monster so useless at frightening people that he has to wear a scary mask. Yucky Chuck, the lunchbox creature born in the deepest depths of your school bag. Plus Zeke, the monster under your bed, Nom Nom, eater of cities, and Grumpy Gramps, the hairy grandpa monster with his very own moustache collection.
PaperToy Monsters is a book full of punch out paper monsters that can be assembled with nothing but glue. There are four sections of monsters: Monster Legends, Earth Ocean and Space Monsters, Mutant Food and Thing Monsters, and Human Monsters. There is also a nice paragraph describing each monster's story and a set of templates in the back of the book so you can design your own monster. The PaperToys come in Intermediate, Easy and Advanced difficulty and I was able to complete both an intermediate and an easy monster without much trouble and I'm one of the least crafty people ever. It was a lot of fun.Appropriateness:I would recommend this book for kids ages ten and up (although younger kids will be able to help and play with the monsters). Any younger and the parent will end up doing most of the work. How to books are great for kids to work on reading carefully and following directions. Made some paper monsters with my niece!!What it's about: It's approximately 200 pages. The left page has a little 'story' about the monster, the right page has the monster dye-cut.

Easy, intermediate, etc.)My thoughts: Love the book!! I totally dig the little monster stories (and all three kids enjoyed listening to me read them). I think the idea is very creative, and the monsters ARE infact fun to put together. They are also all different, so there is something for everyone.Highly recommend it for all ages. I helped my 4 year niece (she did all the folding and gluing).
Once done she ran to get jewel stickers and personalized it a little more!Note: we used a good glue-stick and had absolutely NO problems. And I had no problems punching out the pieces. This book has 50 paper monsters that you punch out, fold and glue. My five year old and seven year old had a blast putting these together with the help of their dad. My seven year old could put some of the easier monsters together almost all by himself but the five year old needed a lot of help with all the monsters he put together. The book recommends using glue to adhere the tabs together but that requires patience to hold the tabs together while the glue dries before moving on the next step.

Since patience is not a virtue my boys have mastered, they used scotch tape. The monsters still turned out looking just fine. This book is great to pull out on a rainy day to have fun projects to work on with your kids. I found this book at one of my favorite bookstores in San Francisco, and I carried around in the store with me for the better part of an hour while I contemplated purchasing it.
